Die Schlachtschule Locations:

San Bernardino, California

Canberra, Australia

San Bernadino, California

The main branch of our school operates in San Bernardino. We hold formal classes on Monday and Wednesday evenings from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. We also hold informal practices on the second and fourth Sunday of each month, also from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m.

Cost

Classes cost $10.00 each, and practices are free for students who have attended at least one formal class that week. We do not use contracts–you pay only for the classes you actually attend.

New students do not need any equipment to get started, and we strongly suggest you not buy any before talking with the Fechtmeister because our school has strict rules about the equipment to be used. We have loaner gear for new students, so you can try it out before spending any money. When you're ready to get started, see our list of approved equipment and suppliers; please note that only approved equipment is permitted in die Schlachtschule classes.

If you are interested in joining us, please contact Hugh Knight (e-mail) for directions and to let us know you're coming so we know to bring extra equipment.

Die Schlachtschule Canberra (the Drop Bear Brigade)

Die Schlactschule is dedicated to the study and teaching of the martial arts of medieval Europe. We use the surviving medieval fencing manuals, or Fechtbücher, to try to learn the ways of combat practiced by medieval knights. We focus on the German fencing manuals dating from the 14th through the late 15th centuries and present a system of combat from grappling, dagger, sword, spear, and pollaxe, both in and out of armour.

Where and when do you practice?

We hold our practice sessions on Monday and Wednesday nights at Weston Creek Community Centre, (next to Cooleman Court Shops) in Weston.

Monday night classes - 6:30 pm - 8:30 pm

Wednesday night classes - 6:30 pm - 8:00 pm

How much does it cost?

Classes run in line with school terms. Terms are commonly 10 weeks.

Your first class is free, so come and see what we do.

Classes are payable per term at $100 for one night a week and $130 for two.

What do I need to get started?

A positive attitude and a willingness to learn. Do not be in a rush to buy a cool sword just yet. There is a lot of gear that you will need eventually, but we have loaner gear for newcomers. You can find a list of equipment suppliers in the links page.
